The Southern Coffey County Trapshooting Club opened the season by participating in the High School Invitational Shoot hosted at Cedar Hill Gun Club at Baldwin Saturday, April 27. Twelve area schools participated with a total of 85 shooters.
SCC entered 10 shooters, with two squads of five shooters each. Squad 2 totaled 343 broken birds of the 500 total targets shot. Squad 1 broke 460 of the possible 500 targets to finish in second place, be- hind the championship team from Ottawa.
Several team and individual records were set at the event. The 460 broken birds was a team high in the five- year history of the SCC Club’s existence. In the third round of shooting, Squad 1 broke 123 of the possible 125 targets with three shooters breaking perfect 25 of 25 and the other two shooters breaking 24 of 25. In total, six of the 10 shooters recorded perfect 25 of 25 rounds at the invitational, and they were Jagger Jacobs, Gage Nickel, Cyrus Nickel, Charles Nickel, Hank Newton and Treyton Houston. Jacobs recorded the team high score of 94 to place third in the high of 94 to place third in the high gun standings for the shoot.
Kansas high school league shooting continues for the team through the month of May, with their next competition set for June 1 at Lone Tree Gun Club near Elsmore. The State tournament will be hosted June 15 in Sedgwick.
